How AiRA calculates these dates

A new moon is the instant the Moon's apparent longitude equals the Sun's; a full moon is the instant the two are exactly 180 degrees apart. AiRA reads both longitudes from Swiss Ephemeris, finds the day the angle crosses that point, then narrows it to the minute. The times are astronomy. What a lunation touches in your own chart depends on your birth data, which is what the personalised reading is for.

A lunation is one instant for the whole world, so the calendar date shifts with the time zone. This table is in UTC.

Frequently asked questions

What are these new and full moon dates calculated from?

From the real positions of the Sun and Moon via Swiss Ephemeris. A new moon is the instant the Moon's longitude equals the Sun's; a full moon is the instant they are 180 degrees apart. The dates are computed, not copied from another site.

Why can the date differ from my calendar by a day?

A lunation is a single instant worldwide, so its calendar date depends on your time zone. The English table uses UTC; the Thai table uses Thailand time (UTC+7). Traditional lunar calendars also follow their own counting rules and can land a day either side of the astronomical moment.

What does the zodiac sign next to each date mean?

It is the sign the Moon occupies at that instant in the tropical zodiac used by Western astrology. At a new moon the Sun is in the same sign; at a full moon the Sun is in the opposite one.
