What Is a Rising Sign (Ascendant)?

Your rising sign — also called your Ascendant — is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born. It's the most time-sensitive point in your entire birth chart: while your Sun sign holds for a whole month and your Moon sign for a few days, your Ascendant can change every couple of hours.

Why your exact birth time matters most here

The sky rotates roughly one full zodiac sign every 2 hours (the exact pace depends on your birth latitude), which means the Ascendant is the single value in a birth chart most sensitive to an inaccurate birth time. Two siblings born a few hours apart on the same day can have entirely different rising signs, even though they share the same Sun sign. This is different from the Moon sign, which moves much more slowly and is more forgiving of a rough birth time.

The 12 possible rising signs

Your Ascendant is always one of the same 12 zodiac signs — which one depends entirely on your exact birth time and place, calculated from real planetary and horizon positions rather than guessed from a generic description.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rising sign (Ascendant)?

Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place you were born. Unlike your Sun sign, your Ascendant reflects your outward personality and the first impression others get of you, more than your inner identity.

Why does my rising sign need such a precise birth time?

Because the Ascendant changes signs very fast — roughly every 2 hours on average (it also depends on your birth latitude). Two people born on the same day, just a few hours apart, can have completely different rising signs. That's why an accurate birth time (not an estimate) matters more for this value than for any other point in your chart.

How is a rising sign different from a Sun sign?

Your Sun sign is calculated from your birth date alone — the same for everyone born that day — and reflects your core identity. Your rising sign is calculated from your exact birth time and place, changes every few hours, and reflects your outward personality and how you instinctively approach the world.

I don't know my exact birth time — can I still find my rising sign?

It's hard to get an accurate one, since the Ascendant is the single most time-sensitive point in a chart. If you're unsure, check your birth certificate or ask family first — your Sun sign and Moon sign can still be calculated fairly accurately even with some uncertainty in birth time.
