Why these dates differ from Thai astrology calendars

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which begins at the March equinox. Thai astrology counts the signs sidereally, against the stars. The two are currently about 24 degrees apart, so the same planet enters a given sign on different dates in each system. Neither table is wrong; they answer different questions. AiRA reads charts with Western astrology, so this page uses the tropical dates.

How AiRA calculates these dates

AiRA reads each planet's apparent longitude from Swiss Ephemeris day by day, finds the day it crosses a 30-degree sign boundary, then narrows the crossing to the minute. A planet moving backwards across a boundary is listed as its own event and marked retrograde. The times are astronomy. Which part of your life a sign change touches depends on where that sign sits in your own chart.

Frequently asked questions

What are these sign-change dates calculated from?

From each planet's real apparent position via Swiss Ephemeris. A planet changes sign at the instant its longitude crosses a 30-degree boundary of the tropical zodiac. The dates are computed, not copied from another site.

Why do Thai astrology calendars give different dates for the same planet?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts at the March equinox. Thai astrology counts the signs sidereally, against the stars, and the two are currently about 24 degrees apart. The same planet therefore enters a given sign on different dates in each system — neither table is a mistake.

Why does a planet sometimes enter a sign, leave it and come back?

When a planet turns retrograde near a sign boundary it crosses back into the previous sign, then re-enters once it turns direct. Each crossing is listed separately and the backward ones are marked retrograde.
